Try setting up a box doing a continous ping (every one second) to your >home system. Watch it and see if you see patterns: exactly every five >minutes, or while it's pinging, it works fine, etc.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone sent for troubleshooting my dissapearing server. Last night I set up nsmon on my home gateway and also on my office gateway. I configured them to watch each other and email me when either box became unreachable. They ping each other every 2 minutes.
My home gateway has not disappeared since (unless I turn of nsmon).
I still want to know why it was disappearing, but at least now it's working albeit with a kludge.
