This will work out extremely badly for Paul if he doesn't use some form of PPP for his Internet connection. Without knowing how his Internet connection works... Anyway, Paul, I would strongly recommend you consider one of the existing firewall packages that are part of Debian and, as such, well developed and supported. Either 'firehol' or 'shorewall' are very good, and popular, choices. My preference is for firehol, but either script can work.
