I can't look at the bug report right now to confirm this, but this may be related to a long-standing SMP code bug in the alpha parts of the kernel. I submitted a patch against the kernel ages ago and it got ignored, fyi. I'll follow up on this later and make sure that this is the same problem that I'm thinking of. Oh, also fyi, there is a code generation bug in gcc that's really behind this, but the code in question is no longer used in 2.4.x, so it should be removed anyway.
