I believe it is the latter from your description, and a known problem in the Perl 5.8 regular expression engine... however, I believe that what I'm thinking of didn't affect 5.6.1, so take this with a grain of salt. -- Daniel Jacobowitz MontaVista Software Debian GNU/Linux Developer
