IMO, "no". At least, debian libc6 should not support optimized package (libc6-i686) at this time. I think providing libc6-i686 optimized package is premature. We should concentrate to stabilize libc6. Other library packages like libssl0.9.x have optimized binaries (/isr/lib/i*86/) since months ago, and VIA C3 issue is occured. Making cmov-aware libc6 does not mean to promote optimized libraries. AFAIK, optimized library is only libssl0.9.x. This means that most library packages are not performance critical. SSL is so heavy. Even there are some hardware ssl accelerater in network hardware market, due to its performance issue. We touch only a few code in glibc (well, and we have to discuss with upstream). It's necessary to work like MMX extension. We can guarantee to use safely on VIA C3 with i686 optimized libraries. And I think this feature does not connect directly with having numbers which support opt libs. If somebody start to provide optimized libraries without performance requirement, please stop. Instead, you should consider to compile all packages with (ex.) 'gcc -march=i686'. Regards, -- gotom
