Well I am sorry to waste your time but it appears I have 2 versions of gnu common c++ that I had compiled and installed. One of them was linked to the old libstdc++3 so I am just going to have to remove them and recompile a few things. At least I know wtf is going on now and maybe I can use gdb now ;).
