Dirk,
        apologies for the delay. I don't think I can turn in anything
self-contained _and_ small. But if it can help narrowing the
investigation, I'm seeing a big difference in link times depending on
whether or not the '-g' flag is enabled. I usually configure the library
so that it's not included on the command line, and my link times are
more or less as they were with previous versions. Today I enabled the
flag to do some debugging, and linking is taking forever.
