I have now tested with xserver-xfree86 (4.2.1-12.1) instead of the experimental dri-trunk xserver.
The same thing happens, running gimp kills the xserver immediately _if_ gimp is running with LANG=no_NO.UTF-8
Setting LANG=no_NO lets me run gimp, even if the xserver itself runs with LANG=no_NO.UTF-8
UTF-8 seems to be the only common thing. Several programs and several xserververs all have the same problem with this.
