This bug has been forwarded upstream as bug 3901 [1]. It has been tagged as WONTFIX with the following answer: "iconv is not a catch-all for encodings. This is what recode is for and recode already has mule support." I am therefore tagging this bug as wontfix for Debian. Patches are welcomed though.
