I'm not sure if you're still trying to locally reproduce this bug or not, but in case it helps, I was able to reproduce it by trying to upgrade to sid using the Debian Etch netinstall VMware image off of http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/ and VMware Player 2.0.2.
