I don't know what the library is or what happens without it or even how to get rid of it. I was able to get one of my systems working again. libc was in a halfway updated state. I guess when it segfaulted during the upgrade it left it in a bad state. I could see that it was segfaulting in a post install script. I was able to run that post install script manually and then configure all to get libc fully installed. Once I did that and rebooted, the system worked again. I will add the details when I get a chance. That system was a 32bit AMD system. The other system is a 64bit AMD system. It seems to be broken in a slightly different way when it segfaulted during the libc upgrade. It seems like it is segfaulting in a pre install script when I try to do a configure all to try to fix it. Trying to run the pre install script manually requires a couple of input arguments that I haven't had a chance to look into to see what to try. I will give more details when I get a chance.
