Well, Ryan, you have said that gdm 2.4 is currently not stable enough, doesn't build on some arches, whatever, to enter unstable. Do you have any objection about someone uploading another gdm packages (called gdm2, gdm-unofficial, or whatever), which people could use and so that it can get correct testing and bugs against it can get corrected and other such things. Then after some time, when it is considered stable, maybe its new maintainer and you can co-maintain the gdm package, or discuss who will continue maintaining it, or whatever is best, but in the meantime we could get an gdm 2.4 package in debian, instead of lot of people trying to package it themselves or try one of the many unofficial packages where no bug report can be submitted againist it. In the case you don't like it, please give us a good reason for it (and not the 'gdm 2.4 is a straigth replacement, so it should not be packaged under another name' everybody is using as excuse).
