I had a similar problem (in addition, dialog was also messed up in
gnome-terminal). I'm not too sure what I did to fix it - only thing I
remember doing is regenerating my locales (dpkg-reconfigure locales).
I just reconfigured the locales and rebooted (well, had to do that
anyway as I built a new kernel ;-) -- unfortunately, it didn't change
anything. Guess I will downgrade gnome-terminal to 2.12 for the time
being as even man-pages are messed up right now and I have some work
that needs to be done.
