In any case, you should not edit those files directly -- use gconf-editor to edit the appropriate entries. > What's the analogous file that's useful to configure the panels - how many > they should be and what stuff should be inside them? IIRC, /apps/panel/ is the location in the gconf tree where you can check those settings.
