HPUX has a broken sum program.  Ignore that bit.
It was out of ignorance that HP used "sum" instead of cksum or md5sum.

No. If "file *.frm" indicates it's a LIF image, then you  can
boot that image from LAN, disk, or tape.

If you can't do LAN boot, my next preference is to dd the .frm image
to a spare hard disk as you've described.

These are NOT "known-good" - but if your's matches, I'd trust it.
