Ok, so why does telnetd require ncurses? I'm not completely sure that telnetd is hanging for this reason, though.
Perhaps the best thing is to install from the freshest .debs I can find, and see if it is still a problem. I thought I did this already, but perhaps I didn't. I will do so and let you know. How close is the 1015 tarball to the most recent collection of .deb files? Is it necessary to install the .deb files at all, or can I just untar the 1015 tarball and run with that? If the tarball is as recent or more recent than the .debs, and it is as complete as the .debs then I know there is significant problem. Thanks. Sorry to be so difficult. FWIW, I promised to do documentation, and documentation I will do. I have added a new chapter to the GRUB documentation - sort of a reader's context chapter, long on prose and short on technical details. I plan also to create a more comprehensive QuickStart section. I know there is one there, but I found it difficult to understand. It's much more clear what it means now that I understand it, but before I understood it I was at sea. Unfortunately, before I release it for review, I need a disclaimer from my employer. Since there are lawyers involved, it's taking forever. It might be faster just to get a new job. In any case, I'll let you know the day I have it ready.
