I can see a number of advantages in having separate release dates, version numbers and names for the Hurd releases. 1. Being a new os the release cycle will probably be shorter for the first couple of years. 2. This would emphasise that the Hurd is a different os even though it is another flavour of "not unix". 3. There would be no need to coordinate the releases of GNU/Linux and the Hurd. This could be a problem as new architectures are added to the Hurd and are ready before the next release of GNU/Linux is due. IMHO the pool system is idealy suited for such a scheme.
