Running xftcache in Speedo font directory...xftcache: error while loading 
shared libraries: libXft.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or 
directory

do the following:
   # export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/X11R6/lib
   # apt-get (or dselect or gui.sh)
that should solve the issue at hand.
