Hi, and here we go again, There is nothing that prohibits anyone to relocate the translators from /hurd to /trans or whatever, the point is that they are in /hurd now and this will not change, and this does not violate the FHS!
The only directory that is "required" on GNU/Hurd is /servers which should be added to the FHS. /hurd does not need to be added! We use /hurd as an central location for all translators. Yes, we could rename the directory, but why? There is absolutely no need for this. It might exist, it might not exist. Just like say /share/gettext or whatever (it exists if you installed gettext, or doesn't if you didn't). As long as the directory doesn't get renamed every second everything will be just fine. Think of /hurd as a specific directory for translators from the Hurd package, and before anyone suggests /opt, then I will once again quote the FHS: 3.12 /opt : Add-on application software packages The Hurd is not an "add-on application software package", it is an essential part of GNU/Hurd so it cannot go there. Note, do not even start discussing where new translators that are not in the Hurd will be added, dump them into /local/hurd, /hurd/local or whatever turns you on. Or if someone writes an full replacement for all the basic translators (exec, auth, init, etc) it won't be the Hurd any more, and in that case they are quite welcome to put all the translators in /smurf and call the system for GNU/Smurf. Finally, the Hurd is not an operating system, GNU/Hurd (it can also be called GNU) is the operating system. GNU/Hurd is just an clearer name of GNU so it doesn't confuse people with GNU/Linux.
