Please send your menu.lst entry that loads Hurd too.  Are you sure that you use
the correct Mach device name?

I thought I had already sent that to the list, but I /have/ been having occasional difficulties with outgoing mail, so perhaps it didn't make it. Anyway, I simply copied the lines from Neal Walfield's install document, but here you go. The -s option is still there since I haven't been able to boot it yet even in single-user mode and run native-install.

root            (hd0,4)
kernel          /boot/gnumach.gz -s     root=device:hd0s5
module          /hurd/ext2fs.static 
--multiboot-command-line=${kernel-command-line}
module          module /lib/ld.so.1 /hurd/exec $(exec-task=task-create)


Each of which is its own line, of course. As I said, there were no other error messages, it just hung there.
