This is going to be a problem.

This is funny.  The oldish Linux IDE driver says:

      * The ATA spec tells large drives to return
      * C/H/S = 16383/16/63 independent of their size.

So why doesn't it?  (Disclaimer: I know little about drives)

Do you mind giving a few details about the hardware in question, both
the laptop and the drive?
