Hi,

for some testing of GNU/Hurd, I tried to install it from the current amd64 ISO (https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/latest/hurd-amd64/current/debian-sid-hurd-amd64-NETINST-1.iso ; file date: 2026-03-14 23:29) in VirtualBox. Although VirtualBox seems to not be the recommended choice, it may be helpful for further debugging to report the issues found when trying VirtualBox:

 * Chipset: PIIX3 or ICH9 does not seem to matter. Tried PIIX3 in the
   following.
 * Enabling UEFI:
     o The UEFI firmware does not find a boot device
       "BdsDxe: No bootable option or device was found"
     o -> Legacy BIOS boot currently seems to be the only possible choice.
 * IDE controller (PIIX3) for the CD-ROM:
     o Selecting "Automated Install" in the boot menu
     o The kernel starts loading, then crashes (kernel panic) in most
       cases and reboots. However, in some cases, it continues until
       trying to mount the ISO: "/hurd/iso9660fs: Could not find valid
       superblock".
 * HPET not activated -> crash of kernel
   (The necessity to activate HPET is documented, but the error message
   could be more explaining.)
 * AHCI controller for the CD-ROM:
     o Selecting "Automated Install" in the boot menu
     o The installer proceeds until network configuration
 * Tried with different network card options provided by VirtualBox:
     o virtio -> "No network interfaces found"
     o Ethernet over USB -> "No network interfaces found"
     o Other cases (E1000, PCnet): "Network autoconfiguration failed"
 * No further progress, since the netinstall ISO requires network access.
