Thankyou for your reply, Eugeniy :)

If I just want to check out the vi.po file (my disk is a bit full

It seems that you cannot do this with svn. You can update only needed
files ('svn up vi.po' in directory with .po-files), but you need to
checkout entire directory first. (You can remove all unneeded files
after checkout, but svn will store copy for you ;))
Thankyou, that explains a couple of things that had puzzled me. I'll
do exactly that.
It looks like the file listed in http may be more current than the
SVN/CVS, which is also the case at Gnome. Perhaps those status-page
files are already msgmerged...?
It may be true for some packages, but I have never seen this for d-i
level1.
It is odd. I'm also puzzled by the fact that the creation date of the
PO file doesn't change when the original strings are changed: this is
usually a good indicator of a file needing update. I've asked about
this in another thread.

Sorry, I'm from the generation that automatically associates Kyiv
with Russia (very tactless and insensitive of me: I apologize humbly :
( ). I need to update my geography: Kyiv is the capital of a
culturally rich and distinct country with a proud history: the
Ukraine. ;)

I'm out of practice: the thing I keep forgetting is to use Shift-7
for the full stop. :D I also have trouble getting used to the
printed characters: I taught myself the Cyrillic alphabet many years
ago, but in script (handwriting), and I think the Cyrillic manual
script is beautiful. Can you get fonts which try to show that?
(Not exactly on-topic, but we learn so much from each other here.
We're very lucky to have such opportunities. :) )
