Trying to get online

Hi people,   I am trying to get online with my debian box.  I ran pppconfig and went through the motions.  My connection is through bartnet.  After I exited the pppconfig I tried pon bartnet and it came up with this message.......   "/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks the support for PPP.  This could be because the PPP kernel module is not loaded or because the kernel is not configured for PPP."   So what do I have to do now.   Andrew Martin   P.S.  pppconfig never asked me for an "irq".  Why?
