ssh, an ssh tunnel, vpns, etc. are secure ways of accessing machines behind
firewalls.

A firewall is there to stop everything you don't want coming in or going
out... You're now specifying something that you *do* want; it's just a
matter of selecting something appropriate, and making sure you know who's
accessing it and when.
