I have been looking at this. Where can I find documentation for "htree",
"index" and "directory index" etc.

There is no indication in my tune2fs, lsattr that any of my partitions support
this.

What kernel version and what version of the file system tools do I need. I am
testing with a 2.6.8 kernel compiled from the debian source package and
mount, e2tools etc from testing. If I create a fresh ext3 partition and mount
it with a "-o index" option, I get an error.

Thanks

Ian
