Are you talking about routing 1Gb/s or routing on a 1Gb/s network? If the former then you should probably buy a box from Cisco, Foundry, or one of the other router vendors. If the latter then Linux may work, but you'll really be pushing it (and you'll want the fastest Athlon CPU available).
