redhat-8 with driver version 1.02.00.036 formats the big partition without a problem. (though anaconda horribly ends with an erreur half-way into the installation. talk about bad installers, I prefer the debian installer any day of the week!) I' gonna install woody now with an updated 3w-xxxx.0 And I will inform 3ware. thanks for all the help tinus.
