If you are trying to use a text app in a kterm, you can tweak settings of an open kterm with ctrl-right-click, ctrl-left-click, etc, to try different combinations for input. This site: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/mozillaime.html was the first result when I googled 'mozilla japanese input'. He has good information for cases where you don't want the whole environment to be Japanized. But really, jvim works pretty well on kon2. Then you're not messing around with xim. Very minimal. Jim
