~ You don't have a trailing '/' in your file, do you? If so, perhaps
try removing that. Also, try changing your JAVACMD value to explicitly specify the java command in your JDK's bin folder per the Debian Java packaging recommendations[0]:
JAVA_HOME := /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01
JAVACMD := ${JAVA_HOME}/bin/java[0] - http://pkg-java.alioth.debian.org/building.html
