Result: I downloaded the .bin (self-extracting shell archive) file from javasoft.com and put everything under /usr/local/java/ (not 100% FHS, I think?), added the bin directory to PATH in /etc/profile and set some links under /etc/alternatives/. I had also to install some old libstdc++. It would be useful to see a .deb package of JDK1.4, be it by Blackdown or by Javasoft. Much better would be a free Java, so that it could go in main.
