The best we can do I think is to identify the applications that should work with GCJ (Ant and LibreOffice for example) and ensure their dependencies are still compatible with the Java 5 API. But as Niels stated it's impossible to keep the Java 5 compatibility everywhere (Java 9 will even be unable to generate Java 5 bytecode [1]).
