I'm fairly confused. I have the ALSA 0.9.0-beta7 drivers installed:

  # strings /lib/modules/2.4.9-686/misc/snd.o | grep Version
  Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.0beta7.

I also have libarts-alsa installed, plus both versions of libasound:

  # dpkg -l libarts-alsa libasound{1,2}
  +++-==============-==============-============================================
  ii libarts-alsa 2.2.1-5 aRts Sound system (built with alsa support)
  ii libasound1 0.5.10-2.1 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (libraries
  ii libasound2 0.9.0beta4-1.1 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (libraries

Artsd works fine for me, as does noatun.
