I don't run woody, but I may have a hint. Look for the file /etc/fstab. There is an entry for /dev/fd0 with the filesystem option auto. So it may be happening the the kernel detectes your floppies as ms-dos disks. There filenames only has 6(?) letters. Thats why they are wrapped if you browse them. If you are exclusively using vfat (Windowsformat) floppies you can change auto to vfat. Thats what I did, although I don't think it is the best solution.
