I also have no other versions of libpng installed:

/usr/lib/libpng.a
/usr/lib/libpng.so
/usr/lib/libpng.so.2
/usr/lib/libpng.so.2.1.0.12
/usr/lib/libpng.so.3
/usr/lib/libpng.so.3.1.2.1

(/usr/lib/libpng.so is a link to /usr/lib/libpng.so.3, but it does not matter
if I chance it to /usr/lib/libpng.so.2, I already tried)

Do you use the packages from kde3.geniussystem.net? I also have a
version I compiled on my own:

libpng.so.2 => /usr/lib/libpng.so.2 (0x40e36000)

It links to libpng.so.2, that is strange.

I still use XF 4.1 from SID and kernel 2.4.18 from SID. But I guess
that should not matter.

less /usr/include/png.h:

/* png.h - header file for PNG reference library
 *
 * libpng version 1.2.1 - December 12, 2001
 * Copyright (c) 1998-2001 Glenn Randers-Pehrson
 * (Version 0.96 Copyright (c) 1996, 1997 Andreas Dilger)
 * (Version 0.88 Copyright (c) 1995, 1996 Guy Eric Schalnat, Group 42,
Inc.)

...

This is the only png.h file on my system (according to locate).

I also have the same problem with xsane. Have anyone any clue what can
be wrong here?

Greetings,
Michael
