I'm not sure that you should actually need root permission to do the modifications - you might like to check out fstab(5), mount(8) to set up your system to allow a user to modify the mounted drive. Also check out usb-perms and hotplug if necessary to make sure that permissions are set correctly. But, to answer the question you posed, you should check out the sudo package - from it's control file: Package: sudo Section: admin Description: Provides limited super user privileges to specific users. Sudo is a program designed to allow a sysadmin to give limited root privileges to users and log root activity. The basic philosophy is to give as few privileges as possible but still allow people to get their work done.
