I have been meaning to report this problem for a while as I've had it for ages. I installed screensaver-nognome and I got a third screensaver option "Xscreensaver". It contains lots of others screensavers within it, which I can configure and test, but they don't work on the desktop. I will try and install kscreensaver and see what happens.
I have a very similar problem with styles as well.
