I tried removing /var/lib/kde, then running update-menu, and update-menu was recreating the directory tree. If it does not do that for you, it sounds like something is wrong with update-menu, or maybe with the /etc/menumethods/kicker script. > any ideas where this directory could be gone and why? i really > didnt delete it by hand... It has happened to me too that config files disappear "by themselves", and I am 100% sure I didn't do it. Due to a "feature" of debian, if a config file disappears, reinstallation or upgrading a package does not put it back. Purging and reinstallation does, though, as does dpkg --force-confmiss. Maybe that's what have happened to you? Check that /etc/menu-methods/kicker is there. There should also be a menu.conf and menu.h in that directory. Karolina
