Unfortunately you lose all your kde setting doing this.
That was probably unecessary. On several machines I tested kde would not start on an upgrade but just selecting kde in kdm as the environment to start fixed it. It would seem that some setting was damaged that pointed to the last environment you logged into and so just reselecting it fixes it.
