I seen something similiar on one of my machines. It has been mismatch in some library (not sure which exactly byt probably libXft.so or libfreetype.so or libXrender.so). I found this library in /usr/lib AND /usr/X11R6/lib. Removing incorrect version solves problem (dpkg -S knows only one of these). I installed this library only from DEB packages - some unoficial - ds. I suggest ldd /usr/bin/kdm_greet and compare against know good machine.
