Well, hfs and hfs+ are two separate modules, are you sure both of them are compiled or loadable/loaded for your kernel ? Also, what kind of hfs+ filesystem you have ? Maybe it is lacking compatibility or something, is it journaled maybe ? Or perhaps there is an endianess problem in the hfs+ driver ? Did this work with a 2.4 kernel ?
