I am now seeing the same problem as Florian reported with the tons of "scsi: 
unknown opcode 0x80". It doesn't seem to be related to having smartd running.

It works fine in kernel-image-2.4.27-2 and kernel-image-2.6.10-1

No. In my case it appears that it is only related to when the disk on that 
controller is being accessed.
