Dear Maintainer,

Today's discussion of the Git/Hg security issues led me to
http://www.dwheeler.com/essays/fixing-unix-linux-filenames.html . I'd like to
see
a mount option on Linux's standard filesystems (ext2/3/4, xfs, jfs, btrfs,
reiser)
to restrict what can be used as a new filename on a particular partition.
Possible
option name would be "checknames", or "restrict_names" ("check" would be similar
to a FAT driver option, but is already taken for a diffrent purpose on
ext2/3/4).

The argument would be a number combining different rules, for example...

0 - allow all characters anywhere (same as at present)

1 - disallow BEL, BS, CR, LF, VT , DC1..DC4 , SUB, ESC , DEL
anywhere in filename; or leading '-', or leading or trailing space or tab

2 - disallow any control character in filename, including encoded 0x80-0x9F

4 - disallow glob ... '*', '?', '[', ']'

8 - disallow pipe ... '<', '>', '"', '|'

16- disallow other OS's separators ... '\', ':'

32- disallow invalid UTF-8

64- disallow UTF-8 encoding unallocated code-points, surrogates, etc.

128-disallow UTF-8 encoding Unicode not in NFC

If a user called creat(2), link(2), or rename(2) with a filename violating one
of
these rules, the call would fail, probably with EINVAL.

The Debian installer should set a default of 99 for new filesystems (unless the
system is being initialized with a non-UTF-8 default locale, perhaps).
