I've received my new laptop with a Ryzen R7 5800U and the display stopped updating as soon as amdgpu took over, and it never came back. The firmware is needed of course, and as a side note, it could be nice if the kernel could fail more gracefully, somehow bringing the display back (it works fine with amdgpu blacklisted, just no acceleration) such that it takes me less than two days to figure it all out. The relevant files are amdgpu/green_sardine_* Thanks!
