Good that you found a workaround :) A solution is still better though.

IIUC if you *only* change to the siduction kernel (i.e. everything else is 
exactly the same, especially the firmware files), then the firmware loads 
normally?

If I did understand correctly, can you then ask the siduction (kernel) people 
what's the most likely change they did to their kernel compared to Debian's?
