Thanks Jonas, but this driver is provided by debian, now. http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/fglrx-driver I'm not really competent enough to judge whether this problem is related to the kernel or the driver (or both) but I did not run into this problem with the older 2.6.12 kernel (driver compiled from same source using m-a). I looked at various logs and that's what I found. If it's not related to the kernel, I can file it against the driver.
