Actually no, I've been using suspend ever since.
However, as I'm now running Linux pcale 6.1.0-39-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC
Debian 6.1.148-1 (2025-08-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux, I tried the sequence again:
~# echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
~# echo reboot > /sys/power/disk
~# echo disk > /sys/power/state
It turned off and on again smoothly. Whatever the problem was, it is gone now.
