The loop does not occur until pcmciutils's init script loads the module. I can reproduce the problem simply by running "modprobe i82365". Before the modprobe, udev is not trying to load it; after the modprobe, there is the endless loop. Apparently the module failing to load somehow causes udev to try to load the module again. There are a constant stream of udevd and modprobe processes starting after the initial modprobe. BTW, I'm up to three machines reproducing it now: vmware, qemu, and my own laptop. > Please provide the output of ps aux; change /etc/udev/hotplug.rules, > uncomment the last line and post the resulting /dev/hotplug.log. If I do this on my laptop, I see: UEVENT[1163790489.337387] add@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UEVENT[1163790489.337404] add@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UEVENT[1163790489.337415] remove@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UEVENT[1163790489.337424] remove@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.339098] add@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.340180] remove@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UEVENT[1163790489.351534] remove@/module/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.352524] remove@/module/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.353861] remove@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UDEV [1163790489.354914] add@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UEVENT[1163790489.366999] add@/module/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.368391] add@/module/i82365 UEVENT[1163790489.369232] add@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UEVENT[1163790489.369249] add@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UEVENT[1163790489.369259] remove@/devices/platform/i82365.0 UEVENT[1163790489.369269] remove@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.370966] add@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UDEV [1163790489.372325] remove@/bus/platform/drivers/i82365 UEVENT[1163790489.379752] remove@/module/i82365 hotplug.log attached. -- see shy jo
