Main problem solved, upgrade to 2.6.24-6 active. What was done: Downgrade grub to stable (version 0.97-27) which removed grub-common in the process. Reinstalled grub testing (version 0.97.37) which reinstalled grub-common (version 1.96+20080426-1) and problem got solved.
