I also have an i8042 chip. The reports seem to have all this in common. I tried the few workarounds in the ubuntu thread posted to noavail.

But after some more digging, I triedpassing i8042.nomux i8042.noloop to the kernel command line and it fixed problem!

This should definitely be passed on to the maintainer of the i8042 driver.
